From Converted Tight Ends to Producing Tight Ends

The third touchdown for the Blue team Thursday night was the first in a Florida uniform for Keeter, the UCLA transfer and former Gainesville Buchholz standout, who had a sparkle in his eye as he relived the moment in the postgame interview room following his squad's 34-0 victory in the annual Orange & Blue Game at Spurrier/Florida Field. "I kind of felt like I wasn't supposed to catch it, [that] it wasn't happening for real, but once I got it I just kind of started trying to celebrate," Keeter said. "I always told myself as a kid I was going to score a touchdown in the 'Swamp.' That's my goal since I was little, but I never thought it would actually happen playing defense. It was very surreal."

Surprising, too. Keeter started spring as a linebacker. Kind of like Dante Zanders did as a defensive end. But spring injuries at the top of the tight end depth chart — Keon Zipperer, Nick Elksnis, Jonathan Odom — sent the UF coaching staff scrambling for bodies at the position, with Keeter, Zanders, and even 283-pound former defensive tackle Griffin McDowell making the move to the other side of the ball.
Significant because of the shell-game circumstances the Gators were dealing with at the position. Keeter, meanwhile, added three receptions for 53 yards, including a 29-yarder, and the second of Richardson's two touchdown passes, which he won't soon forget.
The offseason officially began with he conclusion of the spring game, which Napier said represented a "mid-term exam," of sorts.

"The good thing is we don't actually have to give a grade," he said. "I think it's more of an assessment."

The UF staff will do so across the board, but it was encouraging to see how the converted tight ends adjusted on the fly. For Richardson, finding a connection (and chemistry) with Keeter made for some good hometown headlines. The two played against each other in high school. As it turns out, Keeter's first prep sack came against Richardson, the former Eastside star. "AR15" returned the favor by giving Keeter his first touchdown as a Gator.

"Just him switching over to play tight end for us and just making plays like that, it surprised me," Richardson said. "I'm glad he did it."Them boys get asked to move and they take that role and do it the best they can," fifth-year senior linebacker Ventrell Miller said. "[They're] just team players. Like, they'll do anything for the team. Instead of just caught in a vibe, them boys are getting better every day. Definitely,a lot of respect for those guys."

Richardson understands the sacrifice behind changing positions. As the leader of the offense, he can feel the accountability from the personnel he is working with. It can be daunting learning a new playbook, working with new coaches and training around different teammates.
